Volvo Ocean Race: Cape Town Stopover

5 Dec 2017

Spinlock have joined the Volvo Ocean Race in Cape Town, enjoying the magnificent waterside city at the entrance to the Southern Ocean. Rich in boating history, Cape Town has welcomed sailors for generations and South Africa is home to a significant boat building industry, including Robertson & Caine, Southern Wind Shipyard, Two Oceans and St Francis Maine.

Whilst in Cape Town, Spinlock assisted the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard and Teams to service the Spinlock designed custom lifejacket harnesses, checking for any wear and tear and continuing to train the teams on the use and understanding of the lifejacket and beacon pack, especially with so many new to the race.

The Spinlock Volvo Ocean Race Deckvest Lifejacket was designed with a team of experienced offshore sailors, including Turn the Tide on Plastic skipper Dee Caffari and two-time Race winner Phil Harmer. The aim to develop a lifejacket durable and functional enough to withstand mile upon mile of Southern Ocean slamming, but lightweight and comfortable enough to encourage the sailors to use it, around the clock, for eight months.

Along with the custom lifejackets for the crew on board, each Volvo Ocean 65 is equipped with Spinlock deck harnesses, safety lines, equipment packs and PLB/MOB devices inside a custom beacon pack.

Leg 3 starts on Sunday 10th December 14:00 local time.
